The Process

Wedge.

Wedging the clay is the first step in throwing pots. It’s essentially kneading the clay to remove air bubbles and hard pieces to make sure that it’s a uniform consistency.

Throw.

The Clay is centered, opened, the walls are then pulled up to stretch out the clay, and then the shape is thrown. This will give the basic form of the piece, but the real form is brought out in the trim phase.

Trim.

When the clay has become “leather hard” you can then trim away excess clay and add detail to the form. This is the stage where you can also burnish the clay to make the surface shiny and smooth
